Beloved Sisters is certainly an art flick: a somewhat-true story of two lovely sisters in late 18th-century Weimar who love each other so much that they vow not to let their marriages break them up. Well, guess what.
The luscious period furnishings and costumes–and exquisite lighting--resonate with the world of Jane Austen on film and television, but her stories always come out well in the end.
Caroline von Beulwitz (Hannah Herszsprung) is urged by her widowed mother to remain in a loveless marriage to a rich old guy who supports the family. The younger sister, Charlotte von Lengefeld (Henriette Confurius), falls for the rising young poet Friedrich Schiller, whom she marries. Caroline turns out to be tougher and more talented. Uh oh.
It’s just over two hours--about the same length as Into the Woods –and it doesn’t flag as might be expected. Those who think it does won’t tire of the peaceful fields and lively stagecoach trips.
If you want to know what Schiller was doing, possibly, before he was famous, Beloved Sisters is for you. Plus it’s eye candy.
